Radio Sicuani, based in the capital of the Sicuani district in the Cusco region of southern Peru at an altitude of 3,550 metres, has often been heard here in Salzburg on 1360 kHz in amazing quality over the past few weeks. Received with Perseus/Jaguar on an 80-metre wire antenna.
To my surprise, on 16 June 2025, some very nice signals could be heard from South America. However, they were only audible on frequencies above 1350 kHz and were disrupted by heavy thunderstorms in Central Europe. But it shows that you should keep searching even on ‘weak’ days.

On 18 May 2025, very good signals from Peru could be heard again. Particularly noteworthy was the opening far to the south of the Andean country. Whereas in recent years I had rarely been able to hear stations from Arequipa, this area could now be heard with numerous loud signals.

In mid-May 2025, excellent signals were heard from Peru. Late in the evening of 16 May, I was able to track an initial opening using the 78-metre-long ‘Hari-Windom’ antenna, which had been unused for many years due to lightning protection and was only reinstalled last autumn, hanging at a height of over 20 metres. This antenna receives very strong signals across the entire mediumwave band, including, of course, many signals from Eastern Europe, which could be attenuated more effectively with a Beverage or K9AY antenna. But the good signal strength from South America made up for a lot.
Here are the logs from 17 May 2025 in Salzburg:

For a few days now, I have been testing the small AziLoop electronics, still with short wires and without a pole, to learn how it works. The server in the small ‘Common Interface Unit (CIU)’ – i.e. the interface that sends the control signals to the antenna box and receives the antenna signal – is equipped with a small, independent and very economical server. This server connects to my shack 75 km away, runs extremely stable and is accessible within a second. I have already colour-coordinated the client interface to match my Jaguar software. So far, the test has been without any problems.
On 28 May 2025, several stations from southern Peru and Bolivia could be heard in Salzburg with weak signals.

Receiving stations from Bolivia is always an experience here in Central Europe. Today, on 27 May 2025, I was once again able to receive Radio Luz del Mundo from the capital La Paz on 1560 kHz.
Radio Maria Peru could be heard on 26 May 2025 at around 03:00 UT from Wanchaq, in the province of Cusco in south-central Peru, on 1560 kHz in Salzburg.
On 17 and 18 May 2025, the best Peru signals in many, many months or even years could be heard here in Salzburg. I have not yet heard and verified many things, and there are also some stations for which I have not yet heard an ID – 1040, 1060, 1110, 1120 and 1320. If you listen carefully, you will be busy for a long time with the recordings from these two days. Moments like these make the effort of having your own remote DX station worthwhile.
