QSL: Radio Nacional de Chile.

One of my major goals for 2026 was finally to hear Chile on the mediumwave band. Signals from the narrow western region of South America, situated on the Pacific coast, are usually weak here. So, despite having good equipment, it was only with my new AziLoop antenna in May this year that I was able to receive Radio Cristo llama al Pecador from Rancagua in the Región del Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins on 1570 kHz. The station kindly confirmed my log.

Then, a few weeks ago, I finally picked up an audible signal from Radio Nacional de Chile on 1140 kHz. It was difficult to identify due to other stations from Peru on the same frequency, which, of course, even a loop antenna cannot filter out. For one minute early in the morning, the music programme could be heard on 1140.126, along with the studio announcer’s clear announcement: ‘Esto es Radio Nacional de Chile’. Usually, signals are NOT audible precisely when the station is being identified; in this case, I was lucky that the ‘strongest’ moment of the S5 signal in Salzburg happened to coincide exactly with the station announcement!

Today, the station confirmed the reception to me:
Buenas tardes…..Gracias por sus palabras y alcanzar nuestra señal Y poder mandar un estracfo de nuestras ondas Abrazo muy grande

Such lovely replies are a motivation to keep searching the mediumwave band for further treasures. (Image: AI-generated)

QSL: Lakshadweep Island

Akashvani Kavaratti, the Lakshadweep Islands’ state-run mediumwave broadcaster, confirmed today my reception report regarding the reception of its rarely heard station on 1152 kHz.

“It is truly remarkable that you have been following the programme from such a great distance and have taken the time to share your thoughts on the content with us. Your message is both unexpected and very encouraging. It is gratifying to know that the programme has reached someone so far away and has struck a chord with them.”

It is a great pleasure to have received direct confirmation of this station. However, there is no need to wonder why the Union Territory of Lakshadweep is NOT an “EDXC Radiocountry”, whilst the Union Territory of the Andaman Islands is.

Mozambique.

Even in the height of summer, signals from Africa can be heard on the mediumwave band. Yesterday evening, Emissor Provincial de Cabo Delgado from Mozambique on 1224 kHz could be heard in Salzburg on my AziLoop antenna right up until the end of the broadcast at 2205 UT. Reception was via the new Jaguar v13 Beta software and the excellent Perseus SDR.

On 18 July 2026, only medium-wave signals from the US East Coast were audible, so I turned my attention to Asia. A few lovely signals from India could be heard as broadcasting began after 00 UT. In particular, the reception of TWR Sri Lanka and the lovely birdsong interval signal from the Maldives were a real treat on the medium-wave band today.

Today, 13 July 2026, we’ve picked up a few mediumwave signals from Peru for the first time in a while. Overall, however, the Andean country is very faint this summer; at least here in Salzburg, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina are much stronger.

On the night of 8 July 2026, excellent signals from southern South America could be heard here in Salzburg on the mediumwave band; the few thunderstorms were also a great help. My antenna was my AziLoop system with a circumference of 26 metres, pointing towards 250°.
